Spawning from the abyssal lineage of Typhon and Echidna, the Hydra was cultivated under the dark protection of Hera specifically to devour Heracles. Emerging from the black waters of Lake Lerna, it boasted nine terrifying serpentine heads (though poetic chronicles whisper of fifty or even a hundred).

Its biology defied mortal warfare. Strike down one head, and from the spurting wound, two more immediately sprouted—hardened and ravenous. Deep within its multi-headed vortex sat a single, central golden head that possessed absolute divine immortality, immune to all weapons forged by man.

II. Toxic Miasma & Deadly Attributes

The monster was a walking environmental catastrophe. Its breath carried a virulent miasma capable of turning fertile pastures into barren ash in seconds. Its venom, blood, and saliva thoroughly cursed the land and waters of Lerna. To even breathe the air surrounding its cavern meant instant, agonizing death.

Vulnerability & Seal Method: Physical cutting only amplified its wrath. Its growth could only be halted through immediate fire cauterization of the severed neck stumps. Its immortal core head could not be killed—only entombed under a titan-sized boulder for eternity.

III. The Chronicle of the Second Labor

Commissioned by King Eurystheus, Heracles descended into the toxic swamps. Drawing the beast forth with fire-tipped arrows, Heracles swung his massive iron club, smashing heads only to watch the nightmare multiply exponential times.

Recognizing the impending doom, Heracles summoned his loyal nephew Iolaus. A brutal synergy unfolded: Heracles severed the heads, and Iolaus instantly applied flaming torches to the open stumps, sealing the flesh before new heads could burst forth.

Spiteful of Heracles' progress, Hera dispatched Karkinos, a massive monstrous crab, to bite the hero's foot. Heracles crushed the crab beneath his heel, and Hera immortalized its loyalty as the constellation Cancer. Finally, Heracles severed the immortal central head, burying it beneath a massive rock along the road to Elaeus. He dipped his arrows into the Hydra's black gall, creating the legendary toxic arrows that would shape future tragic history. Yet Eurystheus stripped Heracles of victory, claiming the aid of Iolaus rendered the labor void.

모든 괴물의 원조인 티폰과 에키드나의 혈통을 받아 태어난 히드라는, 신들의 여왕 헤라가 헤라클레스를 말살하기 위해 레르나의 검은 호수 동굴에서 정성껏 키워낸 괴수입니다. 9개의 기괴한 뱀 머리가 뒤엉킨 형상이 대표적이나, 서사시에 따라 50개 혹은 100개의 머리로 묘사되기도 합니다.

히드라의 생체 구조는 인간의 무기를 비웃었습니다. 머리 하나를 잘라내면 상처 부위에서 극렬한 세포 증식이 일어나 2개의 새로운 머리가 번개처럼 자라났습니다. 게다가 여러 머리 가운데 한가운데 위치한 '주 머리'는 신의 힘이 깃든 불사(不死)의 머리로, 그 어떤 칼날로도 파괴할 수 없었습니다.

II. 맹독의 독기와 특징

히드라 자체가 하나의 걸어 다니는 생태 재앙이었습니다. 히드라가 내뱉는 숨결은 독기가 가득하여 인근 농작물과 숲을 순간적으로 사막화시켰고, 피와 침은 지나간 모든 땅과 물을 영구히 오염시켰습니다. 바람을 타고 날아오는 독기만으로도 사람이 목숨을 잃을 정도였습니다.

약점 및 봉인법: 단순한 베기 공격은 히드라를 더욱 강하게 만들 뿐이었습니다. 오직 절단면을 불꽃으로 지져 세포 증식을 막는 것만이 유일한 저지책이었으며, 죽지 않는 중앙 머리는 거대한 바위 밑에 눌러 영원히 압착 봉인해야만 했습니다.

III. 헤라클레스의 제2과업 잔혹사

에우리스테우스 왕의 명령을 받은 헤라클레스는 불화살을 쏘아 히드라를 습지 동굴 밖으로 끌어냈습니다. 헤라클레스가 거대한 몽둥이로 머리를 깨부수기 시작했으나, 깰 때마다 머리가 2개씩 분열하여 전황은 절망적으로 흘러갔습니다.

전술의 한계를 느낀 헤라클레스는 조카 이올라오스에게 도움을 요청했습니다. 헤라클레스가 머리를 날려버리면, 이올라오스가 즉시 횃불로 단면을 지져 재생을 막는 치밀한 연계 전술을 펼쳤습니다.
